Library Book Talk | The Lost Promise: American Universities in the 1960s {Onsite and via Zoom} Online

Ellen Schrecker – Professor Emerita of History at Yeshiva University, 1987-2013 -- examines the turmoil that rocked American campuses in the 1960s. Her new book, The Lost Promise: American Universities in the 1960s (University of Chicago Press)is a gripping account of the radical changes that swept through most colleges and universities. The early sixties were a Golden Age for higher education. It doubled and tripled in size and enjoyed widespread public support. But within a few years that support had disappeared, as the nation’s most intractable social and political problems – the war in Vietnam and the struggle for racial equality -- spilled onto unprepared campuses, turning formerly prestigious institutions into battlegrounds. In dialogue with Paula Geyh, Associate Professor of English at YU, Dr. Schrecker, a leading expert on McCarthyism, will discuss the forces behind a turbulent decade that turned the “ivory tower” and the outside world around it upside down.

The book talk is cosponsored by the Robert M. Beren Department of History and the Yeshiva College Department of English.
