Library Book Talk | Irish Culture & "The People": Populism and its Discontents
Liberal reformer Daniel O'Connell, and later the Irish National Land League (Conradh na Talún), used populist discourse during the 19th century to advance Irish political freedom from British hegemony and expand rights of poor tenant farmers suffering under the yoke of brutal landlords. In Irish Culture & “The People”: Populism and its Discontents (Oxford University Press, 2022), Seamus O'Malley–Assistant Professor of English at Stern College for Women–argues that populism has been a progressive, shaping force in Irish literary culture, cutting across sectarian boundaries and paving the way in the 20th century for an independent Irish republic. In dialogue with Jeffrey Freedman—Professor of History—the discussion will have both cultural sweep and contemporary significance.
